Performance Planning on ONE PAGE
Improving performance and productivity starts with planning, that’s the bad news. The good news… your plan does not have to be drawn out and complicated. In fact, your plan can be written on ONE PAGE and have only THREE points of focus:
1. See Clearly – with a S.M.A.R.T. Vision Statement
Almost 50% of organizations and 95% of individuals have no plan for improving performance and productivity. They hope for change, they want things to get better but, they cannot tell you in a sentence or two what they intend to achieve or accomplish. The starting point for performance improvement is to get very clear on what you want to accomplish and why.
2. Focus Intently – Categories & Goals
Once we have a clear vision for what we want to accomplish it’s time to put together a plan to make it happen. We intensify our focus by selecting specific categories in which to focus our efforts. Those categories might be:
- Sales
- Marketing
- Product Development
- Process Improvement
Measurable objectives (Goals) enable us to gauge our progress as we work in four specific categories.
Examples
- Increase sales revenue by 25% this calendar year
- Implement a targeted marketing program by 6/30
- Publish seminar workbook by 3/31
- Systematize order fulfillment policy by 8/1
3. Work Wisely – Daily/Weekly Action Items
Having a S.M.A.R.T. vision statement, strategic categories and meaningful objectives in place, it’s time to put our daily and weekly calendar to work. It’s time to create activities/tasks that will lead to goal achievement. Goal setting is important – goal achievement is critical. We achieve or goals by taking actions and completing tasks.
Action Items:
Example:
- Make five sales calls per day to targeted prospects
- Draft XYZ marketing plan outline by the end of this month
- Write one exercise for each workbook chapter by 2/15/11
- Review current order fulfillment policy by the end of this week
